He's no doubt talking about Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938), American author of
"Look Homeward, Angel", who had been living in Berlin for quite a while
during the Twenties, I think. He mentions him somewhere else (the diaries
again, no doubt) where he is talking about some short story (something to do
with an underground train??) by that author. I think he might even have met
him at some stage or other... Yes, Noack mentions Thomas Wolfe on pp. 76, 86
and 207. (Conrad, alas, is not in that index...)

Haven't found it yet, and it might even be in "Zwei Mal Halley". I just seem
to have remembered that it's about "Lord Jim", so might not be interesting
anyway...
