Die Schere #26 To whomever is convinced, via familiar and personal experience, that a fire which will break out years from now can be foreseen even unto its details, various questions present themselves - at first only as mental games. The time and place of the perception have the character of a rebus. It is considered a preview, but it can't be interpreted as anything but a flashback - as the signal of an event that lies in the future. During such a preview, a single person occupies two different places in time and space. The path has reached a determined goal in the present, though it also leads beyond. It reminds one of a dream - the dreamer lies in bed and simultaneously participates in a funeral at the cemetery. There are, however, differences: the visionary is not sleeping but is awake and staring out the window. Moreover, the interment must be more than a dream since it will actually take place, exactly as foreseen, perhaps only years later. Thomas Friese "I am not an nonbeliever, but a man who demands something worth believing in. On this point, I am like a bride in her chamber: she listens for the softest step." Where is our team of translators, Walter and Gary? Die Schere #26: Notes The grammatical construction of the first sentence emphasizes distance, a tendency towards generalization, a non-committal way ("Fragen – zunächst als Gedankenspiel") of looking at the problems about to be discussed. This aloofness serves to conceal EJ's intense personal involvement in these matters. The situation of the "Vorschau" is ambiguous because it might be a "Rückschau", a flashback as well. The visionary, the Vorschauer peeps into the future, thus leaps forward in time towards the event which will happen one day. But what is going on might also be understood as going into the opposite direction: the event sends a signal from the future back to the point in time where the Vorschauer perceives it long before it happens. At this point a link between this seemingly far-fetched occult stuff and EJ's earlier reflexions on the path and the goal begins to emerge. The life path of the Vorschauer has not only reached a certain point, but at the moment of second sight it becomes discernible where this path will lead beyond that point. However, the phenomenon of second sight is insufficiently described just by looking at it. So EJ tries to differentiate and define in order to obtain more clarity. Second sight has some traits in common with dreaming, but others are quite different from dreaming: the Vorschauer is wide awake, and what he sees must be more than a dream because it will actually happen.
