Wirtschaftliche und politische Erfolge beschleunigen die Verflachung, während 
sie den Umsatz begünstigen. Der Einschnitt nach 1870 wurde von Burckhardt und 
Nietzsche gebührend registriert. Vor ihnen hatte Goethe den Verlust befürchtet, 
die Romantiker ihn beklagt.

Economic and political triumphs hasten the tendency towards trivialization while 
they favour business. The sea-change after 1870 was duly noted by Burckhardt and 
Nietzsche. Earlier, Goethe had feared the loss, the Romantics had mourned it.
