Rather it is a matter of life and death. As you have seen in the other translations the movement of meaning is tword the military or partisan end of the spectrum. I believe that although what EJ has written in the passage you quote, is indeed very beautiful, he is talking about his own bucolic walks in the surroundings of Wilflingen.
