Sorry to add a negative voice, but I think that starting off with a big
book is risky. We are all busy and may not be able to follow through
week after week. Once you fall behind you may be out. Something short
and self-contained seems a better way to start. For that reason, I like
the idea of Die Schere, which I have not read, for the German side of
the discussion. But for the English... is there nothing short (one or
two readings) that could fit the bill?

I agree that at some point someone should lay down the law: "Beginning
on such and such date we will start reading such and such work, and then
on such and such date we will discuss it."
