I got in contact with E.J.īs works in the age of about 17 or 18.
In a bibliothek I found "Afrikanische Spiele". And the young man in this
book (Herbert Berger) was about in the same situation as I was in those days:
Not to keen about school ("Berger Sie traeumen, Berger Sie sind nicht bei der Sache").

I guess most of us remember such more or less unconfortable situations, donīt we ....?

It was short before I took A-levels and I asked the teacher if we could read
one of E.J.īs books in school (instead of the obligatory Heinrich Boell, Christa Wolf,
Bert Brecht or whatever ...). The reaction of my teacher surprised me. She was
absolutly embarassed about my idea and replied something like "Those works
should be on an index !".

Of course that reaction was another good reason for me to continue reading as much
from E.J. as I could get and my next books then were "Der gordische Knoten" and
"In Stahlgewittern".
