The question is of course what you mean by "abfinden". EJ at an early stage realised that the national socialist regime was on a catastrophic course. EJ: "Hitler war mein politischer Mentor ex negativo". EJ never made the mistake of thinking Hitler was Germany. As a further proof of EJ's negative view of the regime can be mentioned that he stopped contacts with regime friendly writer's like Schauwecker, Baeumler and Blunck. In close likeness to Diavolo EJ in his diaries used Kniebolo as code for Hitler. An English critic of _Auf den Marmorklippen_ wrote that the genius of Germany had started to find itself in relation to the ongoing catastrophe. In his view the book belonged to world literature of the highest order. You have claimed that EJ was an "accomplice", quite a charge. I would say that such an expression calls for an explanation in depth. It is easy to throw around accusations, harder to prove them. More concrete proof is needed. Generalisations are not enough. Well, I could think of other matters in which both Switzerland and Sweden were not so honourable during WWII. But was EJ an accomplice of the regime? Was it enough to be an accomplice to wear a Wehrmacht uniform? Aren't you taking things too far here? Bertil Haggman
