I've noticed that, unlike in the last two years, no-one on the list commemorated Juenger's 'Todestag' on 17 February 1998. I like to do it, a bit belated, with the 'Last Words' of William S. Burroughs, written just one day before his death on 1 August 1997. I have the feeling that the late Juenger and the late Burroughs both underwent a profound personal transformation in the last one or two years before they died (reaching conclusions that were perhaps quite similar). Burroughs kept a diary until his death, whereas Juenger seems to have kept to himself -- very little is known about his last one or two years. The following quote is taken from: 'Last Words: The Final Journals of William S. Burroughs' (it's actually the last entry Burroughs wrote): ---------------------------------------------- Thinking is not enough. Nothing is. There is no final enough of wisdom, experience -- any fucking thing. No Holy Grail, no Final Satori, no final solution. Just conflict. Only thing can resolve conflict is love, like I felt for Fletch and Ruski, Spooner and Calico. Pure love. What I feel for my cats present and past. Love? What is It? Most natural painkiller what there is. LOVE. ----------------------------------------------
