Dear Juenger Friends:
=20
I have been fuming since the FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG began =
publishing the Zuckmayer Dossier for the American Secret Service in the =
1943-44 period. FAZ must be titillating its readers. It appeared that =
they were publishing the articles in an alphabetical order, but then =
they threw in a pabst- and my patience expired.=20
Zuckmayer was one of a few writers Ernst Juenger admired during his =
lifetime. They had became friends during their sojourn in Berlin during =
the 1920's . In those days it was known: " Wer Berlin hat, dem gehoert =
die Welt." Though Zuckmayer was a native of Mainz - near Frankfurt- , =
his mother was a Jew. As Hitler, Ernst Juenger, Friedrich Georg Juenger =
- Carl Zuckmayer ( 1896 - 1977) was also a veteran of W.W.I. In =
contrast to Ernst Juenger, who left an indelible, beneficent impression =
upon Hitler, Zuckmayer did not. However, both of them considered the =
Nazi-Movement a vulgar ( Poebel) phenomenon.
While Zuckmayer left for the United States in May of 1939, the =
patriotic Juenger was advised to settle in Switzerland, - he declined , =
- and would not even consider abandoning his Fatherland . Zuckmayer =
returned to Europe after W.W. I.I.
In the Post-War period Zuckmayer was instrumental in exercising his =
substantial influence with the Allies in Ernst Juenger's De-Nazification =
process. Though Juenger had never been a member of the Nazi-Party, he =
needed and acquired Zuckmayer's support in this battle , - for which =
Juenger was eternally grateful .=20
During the next few decades they maintained a "friendly" =
relationship. They met occasionally, and it was actually , when =
Zuckmayer was on his way for a visit to Wilflingen in January 1977, he =
became ill in Minden, Westfalia - and died.=20
Though FAZ has not yet published the Juenger account - by the way the =
FAZ was Juenger's favorite German newspaper - I expect it to be =
complimentary. Who knows - it may not be published at all, or the day =
preceding the publication of the book. Meanwhile, thousands of Ernst =
Juenger aficionados are being pleasantly titillated, and rush =
frantically to the newspaper- stand every morning to buy their favorite =
newspaper. ( If you care- I prefer DIE SUEDDEUTSCHE)
Up to the publication of the Zuckmayer Dossier I had been an admirer =
of him. I thought ALS WAERS EIN STUECK VON MIR was one of the best =
autobiographies ever written. I commiserated with the couple's struggles =
in rural Vermont- eking out a living. Frequent comments on writing- but =
none on the dossiers to the American government . When I read that book =
several years ago it puzzled me a little, that he returned to Europe and =
settled in Switzerland after the war, particularly in the light of the =
numerous panegyrics upon " Heimat" As Peter Axthelm writes in his book =
THE MODERN CONFESSIONAL NOVEL: " The modern confession can be described =
as a quest for values , an effort to impose meaning and order to one's =
life." It means - you do not have to tell it all - you can be as =
selective as you want to be=20
As Ernst Juenger mentions so frequently: " Manches" sagt man ja =
nicht". However , it is one thing to write an autobiography and depict =
the horrendous conditions of your lifestyle, and another thing to engage =
in a deliberate effort stretching over months or even years (1943-1944) =
to incriminate your compatriots and even some of your friends as =
Zuckmayer does in FAZ 8.2. 2002 Warum fuhr das Schiff ohne Ihn ( G.W. =
Pabst) Nach Amerika : " Er klagte bei unserem letzten Zusammensein ( May =
1939) ueber die finanzielle Beschraenkung bei der Arbeit - - - - Wir =
trennten uns miteinander von mir aus ganz sicher gemeintem " Auf =
Wiedersehn" in New York. I would consider such a statement implying =
"friendship"
However in the remainder of the article he then describes the =
symptoms and characteristics of an infidel person - an urchin.
On the basis of the preceding remarks it would be interesting to know =
whether Zuckmayer ever told Ernst Juenger of the latter's residence in =
the files of Washington D.C.As for myself I consider integrity the prime =
prerequisite of a genuine writer. All of us have our weaknessess , and =
there are occasions when evil spirits or ignorance or enthusiasm or even =
benevolence induce us to inappropriate words or actions. But to betray =
deliberately your compatriots - even your friends, over the course of =
months or even years is indeed the epitome of perfidy - it is =
diabolical. Kein Wunder Zuckmayer verduennisierte sich in die Schweiz. =
As the perspicacious Ernst Juenger says so wisely:" Die Scham der Schuld =
gelehrt . Die Form ermoeglicht den Inhalt, nicht umgekehrt." Heimito von =
Doderer ( 1896-1966) If that is right, - then Zuckmayer is a fraud. =
Herzliche Gruesse aus dem herrlichen Kanada. Henry T. Malon =20
