Rather shocked yesterday to find out that Cameron's monster bore "Titanic" has won 11 Oscars, none of which were deserved for a film which shone by the success of the logistical operation involved. It was striking that Cameron never once actually dealt with the "titanic" aspects of the Titanic. The sinking of the ship recurs frequently in Jünger's work. Cameron avoids the issues of technical hubris (or rather, in about one line associates them with the one-dimensional rich characters who form the opposition to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) altogether. Indeed, by means of his framing narrative with the diving machines he does his best to re-instate technical modernity. And needless to say the film is titanic because of its scale, and because of its complete lack of artistic merit.
