Amazing!  Thanks to you and Rene for solving this puzzle.  I had looked
in books and done a web search without results.

Walter G. Krivitsky, the Soviet defector of 1937, claimed, according to
one memoir, to list Madame Lupescu among the agents he ran in Europe for
Military Intelligence.  So she was a spy.  Shhh... don't tell anyone...
