Hans-Georg Gadamer died yesterday at age 102.

  Here's the AP release.

HEADLINE: German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer, explorer of human

  understanding, dies aged 102

  DATELINE: BERLIN

  BODY:

Hans-Georg Gadamer, a German philosopher who devoted a scholarly lifetime
to

the exploration of human understanding and interpretation, has died. He
was

  102. Gadamer died Wednesday in the western city of Heidelberg, city

authorities said. The cause of his death was not released.

Born Feb. 11, 1900 in Marburg, Gadamer was best-known for "Truth and

Method," his 1960 treatise on the shifting nature of understanding, or
hermeneutics.

Drawing on areas from classical philosophy to linguistics, the book became
a

standard, if tough read for generations of students and had an influence

beyond the university campus in areas such as art and literature.

The son of a chemistry professor, Gadamer had studied widely by the time
he

won a professorship in Marburg in 1937, with a specialty in ancient Greek

  ethics.

He taught in the eastern city of Leipzig during World War II, showing

neither open sympathy or resistance to Hitler's regime and concentrating
on

  his work.

He later lectured in cities such as Frankfurt and Heidelberg, and was also

in demand at universities abroad, especially in North America and Italy.

President Johannes Rau praised Gadamer for making philosophy more relevant

to everyday life. Germany has lost a "great philosopher, a great person,
in

the true meaning of the word," he said.
