Did some searching myself about the 1811 comet, which I should have done in the first place: It was first reported by a Frenchman called Flaugergues and must have been the last one of the size of current Hale-Bopp. Detailed information on observations under http://medicine.wustl.edu/~kronkg/1811.html To Umberto Rossi finding the French climate unfavourable, I just get acquainted with wines from Elbe and Saale/Unstrut, rivers leading to the North Sea and, believe it or not, they do work, even in between comets ;-) Walter Hedderich Wahe@aol.com
