John, you are right, it would be too easy - because you would just get a denial. It is evident from the silence in the media that a public conversion has never taken place. The idea of a clandestine conversion in private, even at the last moment, is to my mind, I repeat it, unacceptable and even repulsive. It would contradict the image I have of EJ as a man who was never afraid to take a position that many of his contemporaries regarded as totally wrong.
