ernst jünger in cyberspace

mailing list archive - Ernst Jünger, Die Schere #69: Note 2: Do improved instruments annihilate earlier modes of perception?

I doubt whether the delusion of the canals of Mars is a common case. It is a
long time since astronomers, after using a new kind of instrument, told
mankind that the sun stands still and the earth moves. Nevertheless, many
people still see the sun going down and up. Has their mode of perception
really been annihilated?
Many occultists and UFO watchers remained convinced of the real existence of
the phenomena they saw, even after the cameras again and again at best
produced luminous spots that could not prove anything. They refused to let
their mode of perception be annihilated.
I think that new instruments merely can add a new dimension to our
perception. The electron microscope does not supersede what we see through
our optical microscope.
