Dear list-members,

one of J's closest friends, his most well-read friend as he once said of
him, Henry Furst, who lived in Italy, translated the war diaries into
italian and after J's son Ernstel's death arranged the transfere of his
corpse to Germany, became a graduate in catholic theology at the age of 60.
Carl Schmitt once stated that the struggle going on was between the catholic
spirit and the jewish spirit and Schmitt's interlocutor Jacob Taubes (to
whom Schmitt sent always a copy of his books, with a personal dedication)
once stated that he had reflected for a long time, what Schmitt, Heidegger
and Hitler had had in common. And his conclusion was that they were
catholics.
Taubes has been asked wether he had spoken with Schmitt about antisemitism.
Taubes:"We have only spoken about antisemitism." Schmitt: "Yes, what do you
expect yourself from me? Consider Peterson (this was his antagonist, but
also his friend, Erik Peterson)... The church only exists because the jews
did not accept... The church is consciously ambivalent, I am a christian and
there is no way to be christian without a pinch of antisemitism." (Jacob
Taubes, "Ad Carl Schmitt. Gegenstrebige Fuegung", Merve Verlag, 1987)
There has also been a soap-opera about a letter of Taubes' to Arnim Mohler.
Schmitt visites J, J tells him about the letter, Schmitt reads the letter
and makes some copies of the flattering exhibit: "Letter of a jewish
intellectual who has understood me better than anyone else."

Leon Bloy in 1892 found very harsh words for the jews when he wrote Le salut
par les Juifs. But 20 years after this book he expressed his regret and
condemned his former attitude, he had found precious friendships among the
jews during those 20 years.
We have all been little hooligans when we were boys, haven't we?
Heidegger dedicated "Sein und Zeit" to Husserl. During the Nationalsocialism
he cancelled the dedication. After the war he put the dedication back again.
EJ found very harsh words in 1930 writing "Ueber Nationalismus und
Judenfrage" in the ueberbuendische Wochenzeitschrift der deutschen Jugend
(edited by him and Werner Lass), "Die Kommenden" (Freitag am 19.Scheidings
1930! Interesting, the old german "pagan" name for the month together with
the "anno domini"). But he tells us already in his war diaries about the
gratitude of those jews whom he and his brother F.G. had helped ("Man kann
den Juden vieles nachsagen, aber nicht, dass sie undankbar sind."). See also
his beautiful comment of the 4th june 1943. But also his statement of the
23rd december 1944 on Otto Weininger: "W's suicide in this context is like
the loss of an army commander in an outpost fight." and on Esau: "Esau was
the first antisemite."
See also his statement of the 20th november 1945: "Antigermanism, like
antisemitism, seems to be a deeply founded athmosphere and mood in the world
(Grundstimmungen der Welt) which has not to be founded elsewise (er bedarf
weiter keiner Begruendungen)".

But what has all this to do with J's conversion?
Nothing, I suppose. But, according to Schmitt, it has to do with
catholicism.

Who is interested in these questions shall read Jules Isaac "Jésus et
Israel" and Jacob Taubes "Die politische Theologie des Paulus".

Regards,

Martin
