168 (p.120) "Ein Grund der Weltangst beruht darin, dass die geschichtliche Ortung unserer Lage zwar zutrifft, aber nicht genuegt. Sie kann nicht genuegen, weil, wie bei einer Springflut groessere Umlaeufe als die historischen eingreifen. Als Spenglers Verdienst ist zu ruehmen, dass er die lineare Betrachtung der Geschichte, die in den reinen Fortschritt auslief, auf den Kreis zurueckfuehrte. Mit Recht traute er sich eine "kopernikanische Wendung" der Geschichtschreibung zu. Die Geschichte hat kein Ziel; sie existiert. Der Weg ist wichtiger als das Ziel insofern, als er in jedem Augenblick, vor allem in dem des Todes, Ziel werden kann." Commentary A few Oswald Spengler quotes on history: "He who does not experience history as it really is - tragic, pervaded by fate, and thus meaningless, aimless, and amoral - is not in the position to make history..." "Mankind has no more goal, purpose, or plan than the species butterfly or orchid. 'Mankind' is either a zoological concept or an empty word. Let this phantom notion vanish from the form-problems of history and a surprising wealth of REAL forms shall emerge." Spengler believed the linear view of history to be both provincial (western) and false. Instead he believed in the cyclical view of history. Each culture has a life cycle of its own similar to that of biological organism. Each culture experiences birth, growth, maturity, and decay (spring, summer, fall, and winter).
