The panic and the terror the Vikings spread wherever they landed and attacked was IMHO (Bertil, you direct descendant of Hägar & Co, please correct me if I'm wrong!) to the effectiveness of their methods of combat (including going berserk) and of pillaging and slaughtering, also due to their unheard-of mobility and the scarcity of reliable news about them and their whereabouts. When EJ writes that it was rather due to "gespeicherte mythische extremely important but it leaves me emptyhanded… Günter Rebing Guenther, No, no icecream relation there. Probably named after Hagar the Viking. The pillaging, slaughter and berserk activities were to a great extent an invention by the Catholic church chroniclers. The Vikings were builders of a number of states and of course after a time were influence by their surroundings in the new settlements. Juengerian greetings
