"The Guardian" ran an article on the Martin Walser vs. Frank Schirrmacher controversy today --> German author hit by Holocaust allegation http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,724331,00.html Interesting detail: Frank Schirrmacher, editor-in-chief of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)newspaper, is a huge Juenger fan. Schirrmacher was present when Francois Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl paid a visit to Juenger on 20 July 1993 and wrote an article about this somewhat unusual encounter back then. I think he also wrote an obit for the FAZ when Juenger died in 1998. Background: The whole controversy between Walser and Schirrmacher is about the Polish/German literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki. Reich-Ranicki, a Holocaust survivor, is the leading literary critic in the German-speaking countries -- and a household name as he has for a long time been the chief presenter of a literary talk show on German television. Reich-Ranicki's got a thick accent, is perceived by many as a good entertainer and often refered to as "Literaturpapst" (pope of literature) in the German-speaking countries (quite often without any trace of irony). His harsh verdicts on books he doesn't like have made him many enemies among writers over the decades. Reich-Ranicki never liked Juenger and never thought much of him as a writer. I think there's at least one article by Reich-Ranicki about Juenger -- I'm not totally positive but I think its title was "Der Dichter in Uniform" and it was published in the "Muenchner AZ", ca. 1975. I think it was Heimo Schwilk, who, in his obit, mentioned that Juenger didn't approve of Reich-Ranicki's hatchet jobs and once said about him: "Der Mann hat ein Problem." (The man's got a problem) As to Martin Walser: I don't wanna take sides here, but I think the man's overrated both as a writer and as a critic of contemporary German society. Wilson's position deteriorated shortly thereafter when in an effort to explain, he first put his hand on her knee and then began his justification with 'Listen, love.' Northern familiarity can go down like a lead balloon south of the river of Deptford. He was fucked." -- Tony Wilson "24 Hour Party People" ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andreas Heidelbauer" <andreas.heidelbauer@student.uni-tuebingen.de> To: <juenger-list@juenger.org> Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 10:07 PM Subject: [Juenger-list] martin walser und die faz > liebe freundinnen und freunde, liebe bekannte, > ich habe zur aktuellen diskussion um martin walsers buch eine stellungnahme > verfasst; diese ist im internet nachzulesen unter: > http://www.libreria.de/walserfaz.html > schöne grüße und bis dann... > andreas heidelbauer | rottenburg/tübingen > www.libreria.de | www.chartpara.de | www.html-discount.de > | | | > | | | > :literatur und mehr :aktuelle charts :webdesign & more > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Juenger-list mailing list > Juenger-list@juenger.org > http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/juenger-list
