Sie könnte wohlgenährt in einer Küche leben, in der an Mäuse nicht einmal zu denken wäre, und würde doch bis an ihr Ende auf diesen Ton ansprechen. Er schiene ihr ein Versprechen zu verkünden---und klänge ihr vielleicht noch angenehmer als der durch eine natürliche Maus verursachte. Auf die nichtvorhandene würde sich eine stärkere Aufmerksamkeit richten als auf die vorhandene. SCHERE #60: Rough translation At this point a note seems appropriate. Even a cat that has never seen a mouse will become attentive when it becomes aware of the scratching. It might be well fed and live in a kichen where mice would be unthinkable and nevertheless would react to that sound until the end of its life. To the cat it would appear to announce a promise - and it might seem even more pleasant to it than that caused by a real mouse. The non-existing mouse would command a more intense attentiveness than a mouse that is in fact there.
