"The path is more important than the goal." This does not mean to say that the
goal is irrelevant, but just that the path cannot be evaluated looking at it
from the goal. The path contains more than the attained - like the possible.
An earthen remnant remains. From this originate the fruitless recalculations
of the historians (...) as well as the retrospective view of the individual at
the missed opportunity.

The curiculum vitae, seen as a work of art, has no need for corrections and
justificatins of this kind. In this sense the maxime also holds, that the
moral evaluation is not sufficient. It is a part of the paedagogical ethos of
the mundane and spiritual powers, and repentance belongs to the autodidactic
part of human existence. Apart from this, morality is subject to fashion, and
epochs and climate have influence too. Absolution on the contrary, as due to
the whole, is completely and assured.

"Treppenwitz der Weltgeschichte"  - I must admit I don't really know the exact
meaning of this phrase - maybe somebody in posession of this knowledge could
fill in.
