Walter, in my Meyers Konversations-Lexikon of 1897 (one of the most cherished  
because most useful reference books in my library)I find under "Esprit":
"Esprit d'escalier (= Treppenwitz) wird in Deutschland scherzweise demjenigen 
beigelegt, welchem "auf der Treppe", d.h. beim Verabschieden, treffende 
Bemerkungen einfallen, die er im Zimmer hätte vorbringen sollen." I wrote my 
notes to #16 before your translation came, so I tried to incorporate the 
explanation in my notes. Günter
