On the question of the ''Treppenwitz der Weltgeschichte'',

In the <Petit Robert>,  ''l'esprit de l'escalier'' is defined as ''un esprit de 
répartie, qui se manifeste à retardement, quand il n'est plus temps'' (a witty 
rejoinder, which appears belatedly, when it is too late).  There follows an 
example from Jules Romains: ''Je me suis dit nettement tout ça, mais un peu 
trop tard, en revenant.  Ça s'appelle l'esprit de l'escalier.''  (I told myself all 
this, but a little too late, on returning.  That is what is called ''staircase wit''.)

This certainly resembles the ''fruchtlosen Nachrechnungen der Historiker'' 

The staircase in question may also  be an oblique etymological reference to 
the ones used by domestics and other menials in the course of their service of 
a great house.
