Hierzu drei Gegensätze, in denen sich die Schere einerseits ihrer Funktion, 
andererseits ihrer reinen Potenz nähert:


                       Prognose/Prophetie

                       Television/Telepathie

                       Erinnerungen/Zeitsprünge


Prognose ist die Vorbeurteilung von Entwicklungen: sie stützt sich auf 
Tatsachen. "An der Prognose erkennt man den erfahrenen und umsichtigen Arzt." 
Dasselbe gilt ganz allgemein für jeden Haushalt und jedes Amt, von einem Tag zu 
anderen und über grosse Zeiträume hinweg. 

Prophetie gründet sich weniger auf Tatsachen als auf Eingebung und 
Erscheinungen. Beide sind schwer nachzuprüfen, rufen aber sowohl im Leben des 
Einzelnen wie in der Entwicklung von Staat und Gesellschaft ungemeine 
Veränderungen hervor. Man könnte an ein Element denken, das nur selten in voller 
Kraft die Zeit verändert, doch das in Spuren jedem Charakter und jedem Programm 
unentbehrlich ist. Sonst würde die Geschichte wie ein Uhrwerk ablaufen. "Savoir 
pour prévoir" (Comte). 

Television_ als die optische Überwindung von Distanzen hat seit der 
Erfindung des Fernrohrs fast unbegrenzte Fortschritte gemacht. Wir können 
auch das Hören einbeziehen - etwa beim Telefonat mit einem Partner, der auf 
dem Bildschirm erscheint. Die Gegenwart des Entfernten wird bereits sehr 
stark. Sie wird noch stärker, wenn der Partner gestorben ist. Das Lichtbild 
zieht ihn aus Staub und Asche heran. Wir könnten mit ihm ein Gespräch führen, 
das ad hoc vorbereitet ist - etwa über die Trostgedanken des Boethius. 

Eine unserer "möglichen" ist die magische Welt. Hier würde Endgültiges 
drohen. Ein Zugang führt über die psychogene Ausrüstung; auch hier werden 
Prothesen geplant. Uralt ist der Weg über die Pharmaka.

_Telepathie_ ist die unmittelbare Wahrnehmung von Ereignissen und Personen 
über beliebige Entfernungen hinweg. Anklänge finden sich in der bekannten 
Tatsache, dass Ehepaare am Frühstückstisch unvermutet auf denselben Gedanken 
kommen, aber auch in der Abmeldung von Toten, von der oft berichtet wird. Die 
Mutter des Matrosen erwacht, während ihr Sohn auf der anderen Seite des 
Planeten ertrinkt. Die telepathische Begabung scheint früher weit verbreitet 
gewesen zu sein. Sie ist bis in die Gegenwart zur unmittelbaren Orientierung 
benutzt worden - so im Indien der Kolonialzeit und bei Fahrten unter der 
polaren Eisdecke.

Im _Zeitsprung_ überspringt die Wahrnehmung Abschnitte der meßbaren Zeit. 

Insofern ist er von der Prophetie zu unterscheiden, denn der Prophet sieht, 
ohne sich zu bewegen, Zukünftiges voraus. Beim Vorgesicht dagegen bewegt sich 
der Wahrnehmende im Zukünftigen; er nimmt an ihm teil.

Wenn daher der Prophet von seiner Schau berichtet, ist mit Irrtümern zu 
rechnen, wie sie großen Entfernungen anhaften. Ähnlich dem Astrologen ist der 
Prophet zuverlässiger in weiten Zusammenhängen als im Detail. Das Klima der 
Jahrhunderte ist ihm gemäßer als das der Wohnstube.

Was dagegen aus der Vorschau des Zeitsprunges berichtet wird, ist 
unumstößlich und unveränderlich wie alles bereits Geschehene; es ist 
_Erinnerung_. Bedeutende Ereignisse werden kaum Wahrgenommen oder nur in 
Einzelheiten oder Nebendingen gesehen - nicht der Krieg, sondern die Helme 
der Kürassiere, die am Hof vorbereiten. Das Kind folgt ihnen mit den Augen, 
halb verwundert, halb erschreckt. Das Tor des Friedhofes ist eingestürzt - 
nicht durch ein Unwetter der Zukunft, sondern durch ein bereits vergangenes. 
Nebensächliches ist auch die Forelle über der Brust des ertrunkenen Bruders 
oder die Nachlässigkeit des Totengräbers während der eigenen Beisetzung. Das 
ist ein Handgeld zum entrée.

Alles trifft ein - doch nicht wegen der strengen Notwendigkeit des 
Schicksals, wie sie selbst Schopenhauer annahm, sondern aus dem einfachen 
Grunde, weil es bereits geschehen ist.

Am Geschehenen ist nichts zu ändern, wohl aber am Zukünftigen. Daher ist das 
Amt eines Propheten nicht nur ein mantisches, sondern zugleich ein 
pädagogisches. Das Orakel bleibt zweideutig.

Hereto three opposites in which the shears approach their
function on the one hand, their pure potential on the other.

                  Prognosis / prophecy
                  Television / telepathy
                  Recollection / time shifts

PROGNOSIS is the anticipatory assessment of developments; it is
grounded in facts.  "One recognizes the experienced and cautious
physician most surely by his prognosis."  The same may be said
overall for every household and every public office, from one
day to the next and over vast stretches of time.  Prophecy is
less grounded in facts than in intuition and revelation.  Both
are difficult to verify, but in the life of individuals as well
as in the development of states and societies they call forth
extraordinary changes.  One can conceive of an element that only
rarely changes the time with its full power, but that in traces
is indispensable to every character and every program. 
Otherwise history would run like clockwork.  "Savoir pour

TELEVISION, as the optical overcoming of distances, has, since
the invention of the telescope, made almost limitless progress. 
We could also include hearing--like talking on the phone with a
partner who appears on a monitor.  The presence of the distant
person will be quite strong.  But it will be even stronger if
the partner is dead.  A luminary image conjures him up from dust
and ashes.  We could have a conversation with him that has been
prepared ad hoc--like about the consolatory ideas of Boethius.

One of our "possible" worlds is the magical.  Here finality
would be threatening.  Access is made through psychogenic
implements; here too protheses are in the making.  Ancient is
the way through pharmaka.

TELEPATHY is the direct perception of events and persons over
any distance you please.  Resonants are found in the well-known
fact that married couples at the breakfast table come unex-
pectedly to the same ideas, but also in the signing off of the
dead, which is often reported.  The mother of a sailor wakes up
when her son is drowning on the other side of the planet.  The
gift of telepathy seems earlier to have been widespread.  Up to
the present it has been used for unmediated orientation--so in
India of the colonial period and during voyages under the polar
icecap.

In a TIME SHIFT perception leaps over segments of measurable
time.  Hence it is to be distinguished from prophecy, for the
prophet foresees the future happening without moving from his
spot.  In foresight, however, the perceiving one moves within
the future happening; he takes part in it.

When the prophet gives an account of what he has seen, one must
reckon with errors, as they attach to great distances.  Like the
astrologer, the prophet is more reliable in broad
correspondences than in detail.  The climate of the centuries
suits him better than that of the living rooms.

However, what is reported foreseen in a time shift is
irreversible and unchangeable, like everything that has already
happened: it is RECOLLECTION.  Significant events are barely
perceived or seen only in particulars or minor details--not the
war, but the helmets of the cuirassiers riding past the
farmhouse.  The child follows them with his eyes, half in
wonder, half in fear.  The graveyard gate has collapsed, not in
a thunderstorm of the future but in one already past.  Minor as
well is the trout over the breast of the drowned brother or the
clumsiness of the gravedigger at one's own burial.  Such is the
coin for entrée.

Everything comes true--yet not due to the strict necessity of
fate, as Schopenhauer assumed, but for the simple reason that it
has already happened.

For what has happened nothing can be changed, quite the contrary
for what is to come.  Thus the profession of prophet is not only
mantic, but likewise pedagogical.  The oracle remains two-sided.

KERN COMMENT:

EJ is treading in very shady groves--the subliminal recesses of
our minds, of everyday life and of history.  His clear formulations,
expressed in short aphorisms, seem to crystallize working
mechanisms of the hidden world, and one wants to believe them. 
Yet they evaporate when subjected to the light of day, to the
consciousness of the reality that returns after their reading. 
Everything foreseen comes true, he says, because it has already
happened.  Yet Revelation was foreseen and in that sense has
happened, yet Jesus Christ has not returned to earth, and the
dead have not awakened.  Nor has any vision of resurrection come
true.  The dead awaken only in the past.
